Joining a gym for the first time is easier when you know what to look for. Start by deciding what you want from it: general fitness, building strength, losing weight or learning to train properly.
Visit before you pay. Walk the floor at the time you plan to train, because a gym that feels roomy at noon can be crowded at 7 pm. Notice whether the equipment is clean and in working order, and whether staff are approachable.
Ask clear questions: what does the membership include, is there a joining fee, can you pause or transfer it, and what happens if you move away. Get the answers in writing.
Pick a gym you can reach easily. Distance is one of the biggest reasons people stop going. Finally, start small. Three sessions a week you actually attend beats six you abandon by week three.
